Raising Children Network now on Facebook

The award-winning Raising Children Network has a new Facebook page to help spread the word about the great resources it provides to parents and professionals.

The Facebook page has new and topical information added regularly, such as play ideas, first aid tips, and suggestions for helping children learn new skills. It also gives parents and professionals a chance to interact directly with the Raising Children Network team.

All of the Facebook content is comprehensive, research-based and non-judgemental. To keep up-to-date on the latest parenting information, become a fan today!

OurTime: MyTime National Forum

MyTime facilitators and play helpers from around the country will come together for a national forum hosted by the Parenting Research Centre in Melbourne on 15 July.

OurTime: The MyTime National Forum will give the MyTime national team an opportunity to consolidate and develop the facilitated peer support model. The forum will also provide the MyTime team with a chance to support and learn from each other.

The agenda has been set by facilitators and play helpers so that it accurately reflects their concerns and showcases their ideas and achievements.

The forum has been made possible through additional support from the Australian Government Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs. This extra funding will allow us to support travel and accommodation costs for participants, especially those from rural and remote areas.

Early Days supports more than 2000 parents

More than 2000 parents and family carers of young children with autism have now attended an Early Days workshop across Australia.

Over 335 workshops have been held in cities, regional centres and small country towns, supporting families in the early days of their child’s assessment and diagnosis. Parents have overwhelmingly reported that the workshops provide excellent information and ideas about how to access support services in their local communities.

The Early Days team is also making a difference in Indigenous communities, delivering workshops to more than 55 professionals, such as teachers and child care workers, working with Indigenous children and families in Alice Springs, Cherbourg, Wollongong and Broome.

These workshops help professionals identify possible Autism Spectrum Disorders in young children to support them working with these children. They are being held in partnership with the Secretariat of National Aboriginal and Islander Child Care.

Healthy Start’s collaboration in action

Opportunities for building the capacity of the community to support parents with learning difficulties and their children were explored at the Healthy Start National Forum in May.

The innovative forum brought together 65 professionals in an active and participatory format, marking a new way of engaging with and supporting professionals.

Following discussion in small and large groups, eight ongoing collaborative projects designed to enhance the lives of parents with learning difficulties and their children were developed. These will live on beyond the work begun at the forum.

The forum was supported by the Department of Families, Community Services, Housing and Indigenous Affairs. Audiovisual highlights of the conference, together with information about ongoing collaborative projects, will be available soon at www.healthystart.net.au.
